From Restless to Creative: Why It's Never Too Late to Pick Up a Brush | Sip and Paint El Cajon

When my mom reached what I'd call her "retirement age" — that season of life when the kids had all flown the nest and her role as the family's anchor began to shift — something I didn't understand happened. She grew restless.

And then she did something about it.

ABOVE: My mom, her art piece, and me...ready to help you join the fun!

She started exploring the things she'd always been curious about but had quietly set aside over the years, tucked behind the beautiful demands of marriage, motherhood, and just living. So when she called to tell me she'd signed up for painting lessons, I'll be honest — my first reaction wasn't exactly supportive. Serious? You're not an artist. I didn't say it out loud, but I thought it. I didn't understand what she was really after.

Then she came home with a completed oil still life. It was surprisingly accurate for a first piece. And in that moment, I got it. I saw what creating had done for her. It wasn't about becoming a professional. It was about coming back to herself.

That memory has stayed with me.

Over the past few years, I've leaned into my own side-passion — photography and painting — and developed a line of conservation pieces that I take to market. But somewhere along the way, I realized I didn't just want to make art. I wanted to share the experience of making it with other people.

So here we are.

colors derived from teas

We're embracing the beloved "sip and paint" concept in El Cajon, but with our own twist — hosting the event at a coffee shop and art gallery, where the art on the walls (from both hobbyists and professionals) surrounds and inspires us, the aroma of fresh coffees and teas fills the air, and the beverages themselves aren't just for sipping. They're part of the palette. That's right — we'll be creating pieces using both traditional pigments and actual coffee and teas. (You'd be amazed at the warm, vibrant, and utterly unique colors these beverages produce on a your art.)

The evening is designed to be fun first and foremost. You'll be guided step by step and walk away with a real piece of art you made with your own hands. But we'll also weave in a few bite-sized tidbits along the way — nothing laborious, nothing intimidating — just spoon-fed insights for the curious minds who want to learn a little more about the craft while they enjoy the ride.

Whether you’re like my mom and me — at a season of life where you find yourself with idle hands and a restless mind, looking for something new to rediscover — or you simply need to unplug from your fast-paced, always-driving world and explore a pastime that just might unleash something within you — come give us a try as we unfold this new adventure together.

We’d love for you to join us at Barb’s Brush & Brew.
